Gemini Shippers is the d/b/a for Fashion Accessories Shippers Association (FASA), one of the first shippers associations formed following the U.S. Shipping Act of 1984. FASA was the shipping division of the fashion accessories association, formerly known as the National Handbag Association and the National Fashion Accessories Association. Gemini is a not-for-profit association offering membership to shippers of almost all commodities. We are comprised of hundreds of small and medium sized companies. With shipments of several thousand containers per month, Gemini combines the freight volume of our members to negotiate contracts with ocean carriers for full containers. Gemini’s expert staff and legal experts have many decades of experience in shipping, Customs, trade finance, transportation and Customs law, etc. Today, Gemini serves companies in the fashion accessory industry, as well as luggage, apparel, footwear, office supplies, toys, household goods, promotional items and much more.
Accessories caught up with Sara Mayes, President of Gemini Shippers to discuss the company’s past, present and future.
I’ve been involved with the association for 30 years. I joined the association as the representative from a member company and moved up to become the president.
What is a typical day like for you?
Days in the office are spent reading e-mail mails, speaking to members or ocean carriers on the telephone, reviewing contract amendments, as well as daily office responsibilities. When I’m traveling, I’m often visiting with members or ocean carriers.
What is your favorite part of this industry?
It’s very rewarding to be able to save companies money on their international ocean freight.
In the roughly one hundred years that our association has been around, we have gone from serving a membership of domestic made products to an industry that is primarily imported goods. It will be interesting to see if production moves back to the United States.
What have been some of the biggest challenges in the market lately?
My biggest concern is that online shopping will soon eliminate brick and mortar and there will be more and more consolidation in the industry.
The most exciting change in the marketplace today is how companies can use the internet in various ways to market their brand to a wider audience and benefit from online sales.
How do you use social media and how has it helped your brand?
Currently we do not use social media.
Are you launching anything new for your clients?
We’re looking to add software that links to our proprietary system. The software that we’re considering would add PO management, costing, links to Customs, etc.
