AccessoriesTheShow creates the world’s largest and most vibrant marketplace for juried accessories each and every season. The company’s mission is to provide designers and retailers with an inspiring and enjoyable place of networking. Designers are able to conduct business with their better customers and prospects from around the globe in a refined and elegant environment while giving retailers the opportunity to discover everything from the latest trends to updated classics.
Originally named Fashion Accessories Expo (FAE) and launched in 1980, the show was purchased by Business Journals, Inc. in 1997 and renamed AccessoriesTheShow (ATS).
ATS runs five times a year in New York at the Javits Convention Center and twice a year in Las Vegas at the Sands Expo/Venetian Resort Hotel.
Accessories caught up with Britton Jones, President and Chief Executive Officer of Business Journals Inc (BJI), parent company of AccessoriesTheShow, and a fourth generation family-owned and managed business-to-business communications company. Britton joined the Company in 1980. Jones currently serves as the Vice Chairman of CEIR and is on the board for both NYC & Company and the Javits Convention Center Customer Advocacy Group.
I rise early and start my day with a walk. It keeps me grounded and helps prepare me for the day ahead. My typical work days are hectic and filled with multitasking calls and meetings with our show directors, industry boards and facilities, to name a few. Producing 26 tradeshows a year requires long, but very productive days. I end my day with a good workout and dinner with my family.
What is your favorite part of this industry?
My favorite part of this industry is the newness and pace of change. There is always something new being introduced to the accessories market and this vitality is an essential ingredient to the success of the industry. As a show producer in the trade show industry, my favorite part is helping people grow their business.
The duration of the economic downturn and the pressure it has placed on the retailing community has been a big challenge. This in turn has threatened the viability of many great retailers, which has changed the breadth and depth of orders placed with the designers. It is a food chain affect where everyone has felt the impact of the current economy. Thankfully retailers and designers are strong, resourceful communities who have honed their skills and business practices to overcome this downturn and prosper.
What are the newest and exciting changes in the marketplace lately?
We embrace technology at AccessoriesTheShow! Our digital efforts are connecting retailers and designers in a whole new way through a robust portfolio of email, website, My Market App and social media outlets. We are driving an increased international audience through our digital outreach and connecting with the industry the way they want to connect. This enhanced digital communication is telling the retailer more about the products and brands they want and who are behind them. We are telling a story and the industry is reacting – more relationships are being developed and our community is growing. Or course, social media factors heavily into this equation.
