2014-memorial-day-saleWhile for many, Memorial Day means backyard barbecues and weekend getaways, many will spend the weekend at the local mall, stocking up on summer essentials.

Memorial Day is this Monday, May 26.

According to a recent survey by coupon destination RetailMeNot, half of consumers (50%) plan to shop Memorial Day weekend sales this year. The survey revealed that consumer plan to spend an average of $183 on purchases.

Accessories definitely factor into the equation. Nearly one quarter (23%) of people plan to take advantage of Memorial Day deals on clothing or shoes. Others think they’ll find a tempting discount on restaurants (19%), or entertainment (18%). And while it is a good time to book a summer vacation, fewer are thinking about taking advantage of travel deals (10%).

One third (33%) of consumers plan to travel for Memorial Day this year, venturing on average 90 miles from home for a getaway. Such trips are often turned into impromptu shopping jaunts as well, as such travel puts them in the vicinity of new stores.

Survey Methodology: The RetailMeNot May Survey was conducted by The Omnibus Company between April 4th 2014 and April 11th, 2014 among 1,075 nationally representative Americans ages 18 and over using an email invitation and an online survey. Quotas are set to ensure reliable and accurate representation of the entire U.S. population ages 18 and over.
