Item of the Day: Naja

NajaItem of the Day: Naja

Today, March 20, is World Sparrow Day (who knew?), a day to raise awareness for the House Sparrow and other urban birds whose populations are declining. To celebrate, we bring to you Naja lingerie, an incredible line that has caught our fancy lately…and one with a little sparrow twist.

Undergarments too often fall into two camps: boring blah or bodacious babe. But newcomer Naja has found that highly coveted middle ground with subtly sexy pieces that have true inner beauty (literally—there are secret surprise prints on the bra cup interiors!).

Not that it’s ever trivial to spend money on lingerie, but Naja erases any doubts with its Underwear for Hope program, which hires and trains women in the poorest countries to sew for Naja, thus empowering them and their families.

Naja is helmed by Colombian-born CEO Catalina Girald, who obviously knows a thing or two about fashion (she had founded MOXSIE, a venture-funded fashion sites later sold to Fab.com). Girald got the idea for Naja on an 18-month backpacking trip, where she saw so many women in poverty and wanted to help.

PLJATS-b_grandeThe introductory capsule collection, inspired by Tattoos and Japanese Shunga, consists of a basic line and three groups including The Secret Lives of Sparrows, One Night in Cashmere, and Miyoko Loves a Dragon.

All fabrics are designed for Naja by a local San Francisco Tattoo artist and individually printed by hand. Parallel to its mission of accessibility, bras range from $45 to $70; panties are $12 to $22.

World Sparrow Day or not, we think any day can be a Naja Day!
