From NYFW runways: “Gypsy Traveler” at Custo Barcelona, Tory Burch, Rodarte

New York—It may be frigid, icy, snowy, rainy or slushy one or two days this week in much of the Eastern half of the United States, but New York was all about fall.

Fall 2014 fashion that is, as evidenced across the myriad of runways at New York Fashion Week.

Dodging black ice to enter the black tents at Lincoln Center (or locations around Manhattan), the fashion cognoscenti were treated to the latest trends, many of which will be key to fall accessories trends.

The Cool Scene

Every day during fashion season, Accessories brings insight into emerging trends. Among those featured this week—and at retail come autumn—were plaids, graphic fur, “gypsy traveler,” and caps. Today, we put the spotlight on Alexander Wang’s innovative leathergoods.

All this newness is sure to keep our minds off dismal retail trends. January is typically a slow month sales wise, but the Department of Commerce reported it was even worse than expected. And much of that downturn was blamed on the polar vortex and other Arctic antics that blasted much of the country.

Problem is, storms may keep consumers away but they also mask what’s really going on at retail—would consumers be spending if they weren’t snowbound? Or would they be staying away anyway?

And as things progress, February may not be any better.
