8th Annual Independent Handbag Designer Awards Seeks Submissions

New York—The most anticipated awards in the handbag industry are coming soon and so is the call for all independent handbag designers!

The Independent Handbag Designer Awards (IHDA) presented by Handbag Designer 101 announces its annual call for submissions for the 8th Annual IHDA recognizing excellence in handbag design.  The application process will close on April 27  and winners will be announced June 18 in New York City.

Call for Entries

Winners in each of the seven categories will be featured in the September issue of InStyle magazine among other “brand-altering and life-changing” prizes. Founder of the IHDA and Handbag Designer 101 Emily Blumenthal also reveals that this year’s Iconoclast Award recipient will be Monica Botkier of BOTKIER, who will be on hand to receive the distinguished honor on the night of the event.

“I am so honored to join the ranks of the past recipients. Handbags mark moments in a woman’s life and in our culture’s history as a whole,” says Botkier. “To be recognized and celebrated by the fellow bag obsessed talents out there is something I am so proud of. It all starts with an idea am I am thrilled to celebrate the independent designers out there!” Past Iconoclast Award recipients include Carlos Falchi, Judith Leiber, Lulu Guinness, Deborah Lloyd for kate spade, Peter Dooney of Dooney and Bourke, Kenneth Cole,and Rafe of the Jones Group.

Designers aspiring to be the next “It Bag” creator will be vying for top honors in multiple categories outlined below. To apply for the 2014 Independent Handbag Designer Awards, designers are invited to visit www.thehandbagawards.com to submit their entry and make sure to put their best bag forward in order to stand out from the 2,000+ expected applicants.

 The IHDA Categories are:

The Best Handbag in Overall Style & Design—Winner will receive a booth at WWDMAGIC and the opportunity to have their line carried at Bloomingdale’s.

The Optitex Best Student-Made Handbag—Winning will garner the opportunity to become an Optitex Brand Ambassador to demonstrate 3D technology throughout Optitex major global customers together with full Optitex 2D & 3D package (worth $20,000) and an iPad mini with the new Optitex Fast Sample application.

The BERNINA Best Handmade Handbag—Winner will receive the BERNINA 560 sewing machine (with a retail value of $5,000.) In addition, winners will have the prestigious opportunity to be an Ambassador for BERNINA in creating blogs and projects for BERNINA social media and We All Sew Blog.

The Timberland Best Green Handbag—Winner will receive the chance to have their product for sale in the Timberland stores.

The FEED Most Socially Responsible Handbag—Winner will receive a feature with on FEEDprojects.com

The Audience Fan Favorite Handbag—Based on Finalists Selected hosted by InStyle.com.

Distinctly Denim by Guess Handbags—Winner will garner an amazing opportunity to have their bag sold on Guess.com, work alongside our handbag designer based in Florence, Italy. A portion of the proceeds of the winning bag will be donated by the Guess Foundation to the social service agency, Peace Over Violence.
