PONS AvarcasItem of the Day: PONS Avarcas

They are known as a favorite of Spanish royalty, not to mention Penelope Cruz and Rafael Nadal.

They are avarcas, a handmade leather sandal most closely identified with the Balearic island resort of Menorca in Spain. Now PONS Avarcas, which produces the original avarcas, is marketing the shoes in the United States, in flat and platform styles in a myriad of colors. (Beware imitations: the authentic avarcas bear a “Product of Menorca” mark).

The Pons Avarcas are being offered here thanks to a husband-wife team Noelia Pahissa and Jose Fuentes who, after moving to San Diego in 2004, missed their favorite casual footwear so much, they wound up founding a U.S. division to import them. (We’re glad they did!)

Besides their versatile, comfortable looks, the avarcas found sustainable-minded fans who appreciated the handmade styles produced by eco-friendly artisans. Not to mention they are a great way to show off those fancy schmancy new pedicures.
