Kohl’s to Open Thanksgiving with Expanded Mobile Presence

Kohl's AppMenomonee Falls, WI—“Grey Thursday” (formerly known as Thanksgiving Day) got another boost Tuesday when Kohl’s announced it would be opening on 8 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 28, ahead of Black Friday.

The department store joins rivals Macy’s and JCPenney which already announced a Thanksgiving Day opening.

“Shopping over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend has become a much-anticipated tradition enjoyed with friends and family,” said Michelle Gass, Kohl’s chief customer officer. “As many customers are eager to get a jumpstart on their shopping, we are opening our stores at 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day as a convenience to our customers who want to make Kohl’s their first stop.”

Mobile Wallet Coming Soon?

The precedent-setting early opening is just one of the ways Kohl’s plans to kick off the final weeks of holiday selling. There’s the start of its “Dream Receipt” program where more than 30,000 of its shoppers could win their entire purchase for free for holiday.

A virtual snapshot program allows shoppers to skip long lines to visit Santa by taking a photo at Kohl’s Snapshots with Santa in-store photo opportunity in Kohl’s stores nationwide.

Kohl’s also plans to up the ante on mobile commerce by adding a mobile wallet to its iPhone app, which includes a new savings wallet, giving shoppers the ability to track Kohl’s Cash right on their phone.

As one of the retailers involved in Merchant Customer Exchange technology, which eventually will incorporate mobile payments into the participating retailers’ point-of-sale systems, Kohl’s beefed up its mobile app. Shoppers will be able to scan the bar code associated with the Kohl’s Cash number to cut down on the number of steps that customers need to take to redeem rewards. Geo-targeted push notifications and offers to opted-in app users also will be used.

A new and improved WiFi systems will be launched in Kohl’s stores, giving shoppers information on what is news and giving offers available to be redeemed on the stop. The WiFi is one way retailers can combat showrooming, and Kohl’s will provide exclusive content in exchange for users’ information on in-store habits.
