While we’re all waiting (not very patiently, we might add) for the highly anticipated The Great Gatsby to open May 10, a unique opportunity to view amazing costumes from the film has been staged at Prada’s Soho boutique.
The movie will surely be great for many reasons, but let’s be honest, we’re most excited about the incredibly elegant looks created by costume designer Catherine Martin with über-fashion designer Miuccia Prada.
The exhibit was recently revealed at the Prada store with a star-studded cocktail party attended by director Baz Luhrmann (husband to Martin), as well as actors Tobey Maguire, Isla Fischer and Carey Mulligan. Now open to the public, the temporary display allows fashion fanatics to get an up-close-and-personal view of these exceptional costumes.
Let’s be clear: this is not your typical exhibit where pieces sit tauntingly behind thick panes of glass. Select looks are set up on a wide staircase and visitors are free to move in and out reading the placards beside each dress, all while envisioning they’re mingling at one of Jay Gatsby’s notorious Jazz Age parties. Dresses are all from previous Prada or Miu Miu collections adapted to suit the movie, or brand new looks designed specifically for the occasion. Imagine yourself dancing the Charleston or sipping a flute of champagne all while getting the opportunity to see the finest costumes the silver screen has to offer.
This spectacular display is free to check out but will only be around through May 12th so pull out your feather headbands, throw on your sequins and shimmy on down to Prada for a once-in-a lifetime experience.
