Local Stores to Get Love on Valentine’s Day

Leading up to February 14 (a.k.a. V-Day), consumers are planning to show their affection for small businesses by shopping small for their gifts and their special night out, according to a study by American Express.

American Express’ OPEN Shop Small Valentine’s Day Monitor found that 91% of consumers believe it is important to support the small businesses in their communities.

When consumers were asked why, 25% of respondents said it was because the people who work there are friendly and “greet me by my name.” Twenty-three percent said they shopped small because staff know them and make personal recommendations.

Key Findings:

  • Consumers plan to spend more than $100 at a small business for Valentine’s
  • Consumers plan to dine at local restaurants this Valentine’s Day
  • More than 40% of consumers plan to dine locally
  • Of those who plan to purchase or dine at a small business on Valentine’s Day, the average amount they will spend is $151.The takeaway? Local retailers should make Valentine’s Day a part of their marketing efforts, drawing in those willing to spread the love around on this special day.
