Flip-Flop Poll: Most Accurate Predictor for President?

Thousand Oaks, CA—You can reference your Rasmussen, Gallup, or Ipsos/Reuters polls to get the latest take on which candidate, President Obama or Gov. Mitt Romney, will win the presidency today.

Or, you can have a look at the official “Flip-Flop” poll!

Begun in September by Flip Flop Shops, a specialty retailer of flip flops, sandals and other footwear, the poll asked consumers to vote for their favorite candidate by putting the best foot forward. By buying the store’s limited edition Obama or Romney flip flops (retail: $10), customers would help their candidate rise in the poll.

“The national debt has 13 zeros behind it and we have two candidates who didn’t always take a firm stance on political issues–what better way to address both problems than with some flips flops!” said Darin Kraetsch, Flip Flop Shops’ chief executive. “We’re not unilaterally going after either party or candidate. We’re simply calling awareness to these issues in a bipartisan, nonpartisan, and non-party affiliated method.”

Besides keeping track with the rise or fall of each candidate, Flip Flop Shops also plans to donate $1 for each pair of flip flops sold to the U.S. Treasury.

So to use “flip-flopping” in a productive way, here are the results: from Sept. 15 through Nov. 5, the store sold 261 Romney styles and 372 Obama styles—giving Obama about an 18% advantage. From the beginning Obama was ahead although Romney caught up with him. Last week (Oct. 29 to Nov. 4), 37 pairs of Romney were sold vs. 45 pairs for Obama. Is this an indication the contest is narrowing? That Obama got a bump from Hurricane Sandy response? Or, as one customers pointed out on the Flip Flop Shops’ Facebook page, “maybe they’re buying them to step on his face?”
