Target Inks Partnership with Designer Prabal Gurung

Minneapolis–Barely a week after touting its Target + Neiman Marcus Holiday Collection, which includes limited edition gifts from 24 designers, Target is at it again, announcing today a partnership with designer Prabal Gurung.

Scheduled to hit all Target stores and online Feb. 10 to March 23, 2013, the limited edition Prabal Gurung collection will include women’s ready-to-wear and accessories, including handbags, shoes and jewelry.

“I am so thrilled to be working with Target on a collection that brings my designs to a wider audience,” said Prabal Gurung. “This collection was inspired by love and if Target’s guests can feel even a little bit of the love that I felt while I was designing this collection, then I will consider it a job well done.”

Target’s designer collaborations, such as Jason Wu and Missoni, have sometimes caused mini-riots among shoppers scrambling to get designer duds at the retailer’s mass merchant prices. The Prabal Gurung for Target collection should be more of the same.

The retailer says the collection “reflects Gurung’s distinct aesthetic, with impeccable tailoring and feminine silhouettes, and features striking prints, hot-hued palettes and sleek styles,” such as “refined dresses, mixed-media skirts, edgy blazers and striking shoes.”

‘Challenge to Interpret My Aesthetic into a Mass-Produced Product’

Retails will range from from $19.99 to $199.99 on apparel and $12.99 to $39.99 for jewelry, handbags and shoes.

In an interview on A Bull’s Eye View, Target’s blogsite, Gurung said working with Target on the Holiday Collection was inspirational  experience about how Target could be a “great partner to introduce an affordable collection that still reflected my design aesthetic.”

“I believe collaborations are important to remaining fresh and relevant in the fast-moving world of fashion and most importantly, they allow you to reach a wider audience,” Gurung said. “For me, it is an exciting challenge to interpret my aesthetic into a mass-produced product.”

Gurung has developed a strong base of fans, from Hollywood’s most-acclaimed to Great Britain’s royalty and beyond. In 2010 Gurung was the recipient of the Ecco Domani Fashion Fund Award and selected as runner up for the 2010, CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund. In 2011, he was honored as one of USA Network’s Character Approved Award recipients, named goodwill ambassador of Maiti Nepal, a finalist of the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Award and was the recipient of the 2011 CFDA Swarovski Award for Womenswear. In addition to his upcoming collaboration with Target, Gurung created an elegant wool cape and bow-clad clutch for Target + Neiman Marcus Holiday Collection, which launches Dec. 1, 2012.
