New York–Harold B. Sachs, longtime executive director of Gemini Shippers Association and Fashion Accessories Shippers Association (FASA), died at his home on Sunday, July 10. He was 86.
Mr. Sachs, who was third generation in the handbag industry, became a legend for his work and dedication to the U.S. handbag and leathergoods industry.
“The entire staff at Gemini/FASA mourns the passing of our former Executive Director, Harold Sachs,” said Sara Mayes, president of Gemini Shipper/FASA. “I have lost my mentor and dear friend and the industry has lost a man who never ran out of stories or knowledge or kind words.”
Born December 1, 1924 in Lawrence, New York, Mr. Sachs was educated in New York schools and McBurney Preparatory School. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Lafayette College and Doctor of Dental Surgery from Temple University.
In 1948 he joined his family business, which had been established in 1898, serving in many capacities until becoming president and principal owner.
During his long career he served the ladies handbag and accessories manufacturing industry as president of the National Fashion Accessories Association (NFAA) and he chaired the Labor Negotiations Committee for the industry for many years, too. He served as an arbitrator for the American Arbitration Association for numerous years and was a long time member of the Rotary Club.
Mr. Sachs is probably best known for his role as executive director at FASA and Gemini Shippers from 1985 until he retired in 2009.
Mr. Sachs is survived by his wife of 40 years, Doris Sachs. He also is survived by his children, Gene Sachs, Harold Jr., Amy Lee and Nancy Barelie and his step-children Nancy Jacob and Stephen Blum, as well as his grandchildren: Chris, Colin, Carole, Patrick, Megan, Michelle, Jessica, Elena, Matthew.
Funeral services for Mr. Sachs will be held at 12:45 p.m., Wednesday, July 13, at the Riverside Chapel, 180 West 76th Street at Amsterdam Avenue, New York City.
