Helsinki—Marimekko, known for their iconic Finish print designs, is planning to put a little spring into footsteps with a new collection with Converse.

Under a new license agreement announced Friday, Converse will be launching a women’s footwear collection, “Converse ♥ Marimekko” next spring featuring popular Converse shoe silhouettes with emblematic print patterns.

Two Icons Team Up

The initial collection will feature some of Marimekko’s graphic prints, including “Tarha” (Garden) and “Pikkusuomu” (Little Flake) by Annika Rimala, and “Kirppu” (Flea) by Maija and Kristina Isola.

“We are excited about partnering with such an inspiring and iconic company as Converse. This enriching collaboration brings together two brands that both have a distinctive idiom and a unique heritage. The two companies have always walked their own path, and we also share the same unpretentious and joyful approach to life. We hope that this positive attitude will be transmitted to the people who will be sporting the Converses in the vibrant Marimekko designs,” says Minna Kemell-Kutvonen, Creative Director of Marimekko.

The shoes will be sold globally at selected Converse and Marimekko stores and at specialty retailers.

Established in 1951 Marimekko gained international prominence in the 1960s and 70s for its bold, colorful designs. The license with Converse is part of a strategy Marimekko announced earlier this year which includes global expansion with the United States topping the list.

Marimekko designs, manufactures and markets apparel, interior decoration textiles, handbags, small leathergoods, scarves, jewelry and other accessories under the Marimekko brand, both in Finland and abroad.
