Hong Kong—It’s a good thing Manolo Blahnik is a shoe designer. Because if the around-the-world-celebration of his 40th year in business is any indication, the designer is going to wear out a few pairs of shoes.
Last year, he teamed up with another Spanish brand, Tous, for a capsule collection of charms based upon some of his bestselling footwear styles.
Then the favorite of Sex and the City’s Carrie Bradshaw teamed up with J. Crew on a special collection due out this fall at J. Crew stores. At Lane Crawford, the luxury specialty store based here, even put in a Manolo pop-up shop, completed with scarves, bags, stationery and luggage.
‘Doyen of Fashion’
“We’ve asked the designer to collaborate with similarly skilled luxury brands in other product categories,” stated Lane Crawford. “These exclusive items exhibit Blahnik’s signature savoir-faire and inimitable taste as a doyen of fashion.”
Among Blahnik’s collaborations were scarves printed with his sketches by Italian textile company Olmetto, leather gloves with French maker Causse Gantier, hand engraved stationery by Connor of New York, and even gourmet baskets by Fortum & Mason featuring items “hand-picked by Mr. Manolo himself.”
Lane Crawford also created an exhibition of Blahnik’s photos, personal objects, inspirations and shoes from his archives. (The 69-year-old Blahnik reportedly has some 19,000 pairs in his own collection).
In addition 10 vintage shoe styles were remade, including black patent, ankle tie sandals, mesh lace up stiletto booties and creations inspired by fine artists such as Mondrian and Calder.
