The world’s largest online retailer, Amazon, is to relaunch its clothing and footwear business. According to reports in the UK’s Financial Times today, the company is going to focus on high-end styles.
The report said that Amazon is recruiting software engineers who it says will build “great new features to change the way people shop for clothing” with the retailer.
US online sales of clothing shoes and accessories grew 17% last year to $27 billion, according to Forrester Research. Growth is expected to outstrip other categories such as electronics over the next five years. Amazon’s total sales last year were $24.5 billion, with analysts estimating about $6 billion to $8 billion coming from apparel, shoes and accessories.
The company is also hiring graphic designers with experience of high-end fashion retailing. The move by Amazon follows an increased foray into the fashion sector by eBay in April. The online auction site launched a stand-alone fashion portal aimed at providing shoppers with an improved shopping experience for apparel, footwear and accessories.
