Founded by Nicola Vogel and Talia Savva, Makia is the first online store of exclusively South African jewelry and accessories designs.
“Our company is an online designer jewelry boutique and a platform for local South African talent to showcase themselves to the rest of the world,” says Vogel. “Makia offers a broad range of original, hand-made designer treasures, within a broad price range [$20 to $400].”
While some designs are completely contemporary, others give a nod to local artisan culture with African print fabrics on handbags, for example.
“It has always been a big debate in the country about what is South African design, and while our focus is not what is seen to be traditional ‘African design’ it is hand made here by South African designers who are strongly influenced by our eclectic local cultures,” Vogel adds. “This is seen in the use of mixed metals and bright colors, for example, Made of Mettle’s perspex range and Bottchermorell’s pebbles hand- picked from the Transkei coast.”
Designs are also inspired by the country’s vast natural resources, like indigenous seedpods and daisies from the Namaqualands on the western cape, not to mention ostrich and crocodile skins or kudu hide.
“So, while, there is a strong element of South African influence – Makia’s overarching aim is to produce jewellery and accessories which are classic contemporary and at the same time compete with and complement international trends,” she says.
Both co-founders have a strong clear vision for local talent and passion for authentic design and have built a business to help other South African Entrepreneurs in the arts and design industry realize their dreams too. Savva designed the 2011 Legacy and 2011 Bespoke Nelson Mandela Bangles and is an acclaimed young designer with a strong drive to develop the industry in South Africa.
